Verdict of General Elections 2014 - Grow Up and Be Accountable

Post the emergence of the election results in the world’s largest democracy, all that one can see are two particularly telling trends. These trends are telling because it shows more about the new Opposition and its so called ‘leaders’ than about Narenda Modi, BJP and its allies put together. Let us discuss in detail these two trends.

Since the beginning of this week, there has been so much ‘wondering’ and ‘amazement’ about the BJP gaining a clear majority with just 31% of the nation’s vote. This is nothing but an attempt at best to find ways of how the victory of Narendra Modi-led BJP and NDA can be belittled. Worst, it consciously chooses to ignore facts. North and West India have a far larger number of seats compared to the rest of India, even though population may be nearly the same. In many of these states, more than 50% of the population voted for the BJP in two way contests. Even in Uttar Pradesh, more than 40% of the votes polled were for the BJP and its ally Apna Dal. The very people who always made fun of the BJP for being a ‘cowbelt’ party are now furious with the resounding victory in the same cowbelt in addition to having secured a larger voteshare than the ideological bedmates of the Congress, such as the Left in Bengal. Even as Sitaram Yechury was indignant in today’s Hindustan Times column, he conveniently forgets that the Left never won even 50% of the votes in their own citadels of Kerala and Bengal and yet won clear majorities. To see him complain now about the deficiencies of the first past the post system is laughable, when one recalls the Left’s tally of 67 seats in 2004 and the way they secured it. The same numbers are being used to sermonize by Gopalkrishna Gandhi for the The Hindu; however, as R Jagannathan clearly countered in a rejoinder, by his same logic, a larger number of voters have rejected Congress, DMK, AIADMK, Left, Trinamool and so many other parties. It also belittles all those NDA voters in the North East too, just because they become numerically insignificant due to their small population. In the first past the post system, we have a system of elimination taking place and not one of selection, and this is something that one needs to admit. However, the logic is hypocritical. When the BJP in the late ninetees talked about amending the electoral system, all these parties vehemently opposed it. How times change is proven by the exuberance shown when Congress won about 30% of the vote and 206 seats, which was declared decisive by the same cabal of media, experts and South Delhi cocktail circuit that are now finding faults with this system just because it did not present desirable results. Goalposts are conveniently being shifted by the so called liberal elite. The same people had declared Akhilesh Yadav’s 30% vote share in the 2012 Uttar Pradesh assembly election as a historic mandate. By quibbling endlessly, this cabal has reduced itself to a laughing stock, earning themselves the epithet of goalpost shift-ers and libtards who have problems with anything saffron (I wonder how they resist not shouting out Hindutva when they see saffron on India’s flag). The kind of reaction giving to the Ganga arti by Narendra Modi can only be deemed rank stupid, especially when the Constitution guarantees its citizens to practice their religion, irrespective of them being part of a minority or a majority. But that is a story for another day.    

Another major trend that is in your face these days is that everyone in the new Opposition is hard-pressed to find ways in avoiding responsibility for their own disasters, when it not just lies on their doorsteps, but has in fact walked into the room and stands right next to them. Witnessing the Congress (I)’s working committee sham and the Nitish Kumar resignation joke, or Arvind Kejriwal’s ‘disappointment’ with the verdict should have called for deep thought and introspection on why people rejected their so called messages. It speaks volumes that the only non NDA parties that did not shout ‘secularism in danger’ , such as Trinamool Congress, Biju Janata Dal, and AIADMK, managed to win far more seats than the UPA and Left put together. Clearly, no one in India thinks that secularism is in danger - rather, people voted for those parties that wanted to talk about development or the real BSP of India - Bijli, Sadak, Paani (Electricity, Roads and Water). In these three states, the BJP replaced the Congress as the national party if one looks at the vote shares secured. In Bihar, Nitish Kumar had dug his own political grave by not understanding the mood of the people, which may be attributed to his arrogance that has been quoted in several media circles. Adopting the Congress model of micro-management of government, a lameduck Chief Minister, Jitan Lal Manjhi, has been appointed. It is telling to note that among other factors, the Shiv Sena-BJP government of Maharashtra was thrown out because power really lay at the doorsteps of Matoshree. This model renders permanent policy paralysis, reducing the head of government to nothing more than a poor joke. Clearly, the buck should stop with the man in charge, and if there is no in charge like the Congress led UPA or Nitish Kumar led Janata Dal United for the defeat, then they can only wish their dreams of revival an emphatic goodbye. Someone has to be accountable.

Hence, the message in one line from this verdict is simple - grow up, and learn to be accountable instead of being a quibbler.
